Artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Nat King Cole, and many others performed in nightclubs and theaters alongside local legends such as Sugar Pie DeSanto, John Handy, Vernon Alley, Johnny Otis, Allen Smith, Eddie Duran, Pony Poindexter, Etta James, and, later on, Mary Stallings. \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003eThis was, in fact, a major renaissance that was appropriately called the “Harlem of the West” and ushered in a cultural revolution of music, art, fashion, food, dance, and literature.
