About the Program
Marcus Shelby and the “Harlem of the West Players” will perform a 90-minute set that celebrates the history of black music that began on the West Coast in the famous Fillmore District in the early 1940s. Artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Nat King Cole, and many others performed in nightclubs and theaters alongside local legends such as Sugar Pie DeSanto, John Handy, Vernon Alley, Johnny Otis, Allen Smith, Eddie Duran, Pony Poindexter, Etta James, and, later on, Mary Stallings.
This was in fact a major renaissance that was appropriately called the “Harlem of the West” and ushered in a cultural revolution of music, art, fashion, food, dance, and literature. Marcus Shelby and the “Harlem of the West Players” are comprised of 3 musicians, a poet, and a singer. The group will perform music throughout while collectively telling the story of the Harlem of the West.

About the Transamerica Pyramid
The Transamerica Pyramid opened in 1972 at 600 Montgomery Street, long known as the “Wall Street of the West” and the gateway to San Francisco’s Financial District. Designed by William L. Pereira & Associates, this iconic masterpiece stands as a beacon to the vibrant downtown of one of the world’s most influential and sought-after gateway cities. Spanning an entire city block on the northern edge of the Financial District in the heart of Jackson Square, the Transamerica Pyramid Center, which encompasses Two and Three Transamerica and Transamerica Redwood Park, celebrated its official reopening in September 2024 after a thoughtful and innovative remastering by SHVO and Foster + Partners. The modernization includes a hotel-like aesthetic that welcomes tenants and guests with luxurious private amenities and expanded public spaces.
